CPIE Notebook Project - Grasses and Sedges of Hawai‘i Sedge Key – Page 36

Key to Genus Machaerina Vahl.

Sedges in the Genus Machaerina are large bunchy sedges with numerous strap-shaped leaves and a conspicuous redish-brown inflorescence. These sedges are found only above 500 ft elevation (above 1000 ft for the more common, M. angustfolia) on all the main Hawaiian Islands. On Guam, the genus is represented by a single native species growing in thickets of trees and shrubs in the southern hills.
