Codes & Abbreviations

common names - Common names are those generally used in the Hawaiian
Islands to refer to the particular species; omitted if unknown or no common name. Regulatory status (listed species) is also indicated in this column:
(L) indicates a species listed as rare by private, State, Federal, or international organization(s). A link is provided to the listing. Other codes are for listings under U.S. Endangered Species Act (USFWS, 1996) as follows: /C = candidate species; /T = threatened species; /E = endangered species.
status (native or introduced)
end = endemic, only found in nature in the Hawaiian Islands
ind = indigenous, native to the Hawaiian Islands, but also native to other areas as well
nat = naturalized or adventive; accidentally introduced to the wild and now established in the Hawaiian Islands.
exo = exotic; introduced to the Hawaiian Islands but not established in nature.

M = Maui
main = all the main islands (K, O, Mo, L, M, and H)
Mo = Moloka'i
N = Ni'ihau
O = O'ahu

A = anchialine (isolated pool influenced by the sea)
E = estuarine; or brackish water
L = lakes or reservoirs
Me = essentially marine, but found in the lower estuary or
      along the shore where brackish water seeps occur
P = pools, or ponds
R = rheocrene; seep, wet moss; terrestrial in wet situations
S = stream, flowing water
V = vegetation; water captured in leaf axils
origin (if not native to Hawai`i, from where or where the species is native)
