Native Plants at the
Nā Pōhaku o Hauwahine Restoration Project

Family SAPINDACEAE

'a'ali'i Dodonaea viscosa Jacq.

‘A‘ali‘i

Scale = 4/5

NOTES (2018): Grows well into a large shrub. If an area around older ‘A‘ali‘i female plants is cleared of weeds before the wet season, numerous seedlings appear and some of these young plants persist, but otherwise this species speads rather weakly at Nā Pōhaku. Larger plants will eventually succumb if shaded by trees overtopping them.

Sapindus oahuensis Hillebr. ex Radlk.

Lonomea, aulu

Scale = 3/4

NOTES (2018): Slow, steady growth in wet and dry seasons. Young trees attacked by twig borers. Many of our trees are of substantal size (20+ feet) and producing an abundance of seeds. No spontaneous germinations seen to date (2018).

Sapindus saponaria L.

Mānele, a‘e

Scale = 3/4

NOTES (2018): This Hawai‘i Island tree has grown steadily from a planting made several years ago, and now flowers regularly; not yet checked for seed production. In 2017, a second sapling was donated and planted not far from the initial planting on the south slope below the contour trail.

Population: 2 (05/18).
